We all have those favorite books we love but have read so many times that we are bored too. We don’t want to give them up but neither do we look forward to reading them anymore. So here are some cool ways to keep using those books even after you are bored:
1. Sequencing Games:
After you read a book, play a game which involves remembering the sequence of events or characters . Example: Which animal came first in the book? Then next who came in? and so on! It could be with a character, fruit or anything based on the book! This helps the child build memory and concentration.
2. Look & Find:
Children’s books are full of pictures that are vibrant and interesting. So on every page I choose 2 objects for her to find. This makes re-reading the book more fun!
3. Sight Word Search:
I pick out a different sight words for a page and ask her to point to them in each page.
You can also count how many times a word comes up on each page.
4. Draw your favorite Character:
We pick out some of her favourite books with characters she loves and we play this in 2 ways.
- Either she copies the character and draws them.
- Or we imagine how we would make the characters in our own way. For example: I read her the description of ‘The Gruffallo’ and she draws her own version.
Its works well to get them to draw!
5. Alternate Book Ending:
We skip reading the last 1-2 pages of the book and discuss alternate endings to the book. I ask her to imagine what if something else happened and she comes up with amazing funny endings! For example: in The Hungry Caterpillar, what if it didn’t become a butterfly and continued to have a tummy ache?
