Shravan is the the month when we pray to Shivji so let us read a little bit about its significance of the month of Shravan along with Shivji Mantras to chant during this month to receive his blessings.
The word “Shiva” means Kalyan (welfare).
Shiva is the cause of every living being’s existence. So, let us know some interesting facts related to the Holy Shravan month.
Two stories about Saavan:
- The Daughter of Daksh
The daughter of Daksh had sacrificed her life and was reborn as Parvati in the home of Himalaya King. Parvati wanted to marry Lord Shiva. That is the reason why she performed penance during Shravan month. Lord Shiva was pleased with the devotion of Parvati and he fulfilled her wish.
2. The Samudra Manthan
Once Maharishi Durvasa cursed Lord Indra, King of Devas, that he and all Devas would lose their powers. So a war broke out between Asuras and Devas. Powerless devas went to seek help from Lord Vishnu, who suggested them to drink Amrit to regain their power.
Devas formed an alliance with the Asuras to churn the ocean (Samudra Manthan) and get the Amrit and divide equally.
To start Samudra Manthan snake Vasuki was tied as rope, Devas and Asuras started pulling him either sides and hence churning the ocean
At the time of churning the ocean, 14 gems, Kamdhenu and other auspicious things came out of the ocean along with the poison (Halahal), it had the ability to destroy the world.
Lord Shiva then came to rescue and drank all the poison and stored it in his throat, which turned out blue in colour that is why Lord Shiva is called Neelkanth also. This event is celebrated as Shravan month
In Sawan, which is believed to be the month of Shiva, the worshippers observe a fast every Monday (Somwar)
It is believed that Savan is a sacred month dedicated to worshipping Lord Shiva for success, marriage, and wealth
Devotees visit the temple of Lord Shiva and perform Abhishek (bath) to the Shiv Ling. This is done to cool down the effect of the poison that Shivji drank during the Samudra Manthan.
