18 Amazing ways to use Leftover Dal

Dal is a staple that is served in most Indian households and we all love it!  

But at times, unknowingly, we end up making extra dal. Ever considered preparing a quick and wonderful dish with this leftover dal?

These recipes, ranging from patties to dal pakora and paratha, can not only save you time and effort but also help you out of the monotony of eating the same dish repeatedly.

Dal Parathas

Dough the dal and flour together with some garlic, salt, black pepper and dry chili flakes (you can add your choice of spices) and make crispy Parathas.

Neer Dosa

Prepare neer dosa as usual. Add leftover daal and half egg omelet egg (optional) as spread over it. Fold the other side of the dosa so it looks like crepe.

Dal Cheela

Add flour and water in leftover dal to prepare a batter. Spread the batter on a tawa and make small cheelas.

Dal Pakoras

Mix leftover dal with besan, and spices. Dip chopped potato cubes in it and fry them to prepare dal pakoras.

Dal Tikkas

Mix dal with besan, grated carrot, capsicum, onion and some spices. Make small tikkis and shallow fry them.

Knead dough with daal well making sure the outer crunch of the pooris. Serve with aloo ki sabzi, and enjoy the delicious meal

Kurkuri Dal Sticks 

Mix leftover dal with semolina and corn flour. Add some spices. Make balls and shape with your palms of sticks . Deep fry.

Dal Cutlet

Add  grated carrot, boiled  mashed potato, sweet corn and bread crumbs, spices to the leftover dal. Make small cutlets and deep fry.

Dal Baati 

Dry fry the dal with spice, onions and tomatoes. Use as stuffing in baati. Serve hot with daal, chokha and dollop of ghee.

Dal Thalipeeth

Mix leftover dal with jowar flour, besan, rice flour, coriander ,onion.  Flatten dough ball with fingers on a greased pan and cook on medium heat.

Add dal and water in a large pot. Bring it to a boil. Strain the soupy liquid (shorba) from the dal into another pot.Add lemon juice, coriander and a little of strained thick daal.

Dal Burger / Sloppy Joes

Dal Toast

Thicken the leftover dal with besan. Season with salt and red chile powder to taste. Add some hing (asafoetida, a special herb) too. Use a spoon or knife to spread this paste on a piece of bread. Heat on a grill or skillet with a little oil or ghee. Flip over and repeat until the bread is nice and toasted
