If you plan on home-schooling your child, having the right expectations will really help you make it a fun process. Having the correct image and not just a rosy one is extremely important!
Here is a list of Do’s and Don’ts for home-schooling
Do’s of Home-schooling
1. Find a weekly routine that works for you and your child.
2. Include a variety of activities based on your child’s interest.
3. Prepare a weekly/daily activity plan in advance.
4. Plan your activities around your child’s current interest. For example: if you child is obsessed with building blocks plan activities like counting, pattern forming and so on.
5. Always include activities for grooming gross and fine motor skills.
6. Follow your child’s learning cues. Example: If your child is interested in Dinosaur, read them more about Dinosaurs even if your plan had flowers in it.
7. Make reading a daily activity and stick to it. Books has been the most powerful tool for me while home-schooling.
8. Always appreciate your child’s progress. Tell them about how well they are learning.
Don’ts of Homeschooling
1. Don’t use pressure or force while teaching, make it fun.
2. Don’t have the same expectation from each day – some days they will do more and some days very less. Both are okay.
3. Don’t over instruct the child. If there are too many limits the child may not enjoy.
4. Don’t nag your child if they don’t complete something well.
5. Don’t over praise your child. Avoid saying “you are the best at colouring”. Say “you are getting better each day”.
6. Don’t bribe your child with candy for studies.
7. Don’t compare your child’s the progress of others.
8. Do not link your love and emotions to your child’s studies. Do not say “I’ll love you more if you finish this”.
Print this and stick somewhere you can see it daily. This can be a great reminder for when you are feeling stuck in your home-schooling journey!
Have a great day parents!
