Teaching kids may feel like a herculean task but breaking it down into small routine based tasks can make it effortless. You do not need a daily math hour, English hour and so on if you use daily life tasks and inculcate learning throughout your day.
Here are some of my favorite under 5 minute things we do to learn larger concepts:
- Tell kids the name of the day and Month Daily and eventually they will learn 7 days of the week. Once they know the basic ask them about which day it is tomorrow or was yesterday and so on.
- Tell them to recall all the things they love and say ‘Thank you’ for it every morning – This is my favorite way to inculcate gratitude and mindfulness from an early age.
- Get them to count 1-10 while doing simple chores – bites of their food, number of times they poured water with the mug during a bath, or taking stairs and so on.
- Talk about the city you live in and include the state and country in the conversation. Use simple props around you to show them how the world has continents, continents have countries and then states and cities and so on.
- Tell them the names of all the fruits and vegetables in the house while sorting groceries. Including them in chores is one of the best ways to teach them!
- Involve them in watering the plants and telling them a little about how the plants grow. Spending time with nature not only helps in learning but is great for their overall health too!
- Read 1 story book every day!
- Tell them to think of all the things that made them happy during the day and say thank you for it at the end of the day.
- Play name the objects: name everything you see in a room/restaurant or wherever you are – you will be surprised how many new things you will discover!
- Draw a picture together: Expressing through art and getting creative is a great bonding activity and helps your child discover a hobby or an activity to calm themselves down.
- Play a favorite Game: Take a picture book and choose a favorite thing on a page. Whoever picks the favorite first wins and keep turning pages. You will discover new things in the book each time and its super fun and fast!
